WELCOME TO OUR CAREERS AREA

Careers Vision: All students will be immersed in a programme of experiences and tailored guidance enabling them to make informed decisions and actions to broker aspirations.

We’re committed to providing all students in Year 7-11 with a programme of tailored careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG). This programme is guided by the Gatsby benchmarks for ensuring best practice and evaluated using. It will be timely, integrated and promote equality of opportunity, embrace diversity and challenge stereotypes.

The Careers Leader along with the Enterprise Advisor network, Independent Careers Advisor, Curriculum Leaders External Providers, Link Governor and employers strive for continuous improvement and build on each benchmark further. The school is also a key member of the Liverpool City Region Careers Hub.

The school is committed to all 8 Benchmarks

  1. A stable Careers Programme
  2. Learning from Career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experience of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal Guidance

We support students in making well-informed decisions by providing access to differentiated, impartial and independent information and guidance about the range of pathways available to them (including academic, vocational, technical and apprenticeships). By supporting students with decisions at crucial transition stages we aim to prepare them for the world of work whichever pathway they choose. As a result our pupils move on to further education and training, including those students with SEND.

Impact and Review of the Careers Education and Guidance Approach

Our school Careers Programme is reviewed on an annual basis by the Careers Lead with support from SLT and governors. We measure the impact of our programme in the following ways:

  • Reviewing student post 16 destinations data alongside the local authority and Career Connect. The effectiveness of our careers programme will be reflected in the high numbers of students progressing to positive destinations such as apprenticeships, sixth form colleges, further education colleges.
  • Termly Compass+ reviews are completed by the Careers Leader to assess schools progress towards achieving the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks of good careers guidance. The Careers Programme is revised based on the outcomes of these audits.
  • Regular feedback from key stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, employers and educational providers is collated during the academic year. This feedback is collected through questionnaires and focus groups following key careers activities and is used to make improvements to the careers programme.
  • The CEIAG policy is reviewed by the Careers Leader and ratified by Governors.

Provider Access Policy

This policy sets out the schools’ arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the providers education or training offer. This complies with the schools legal obligations under section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

A provider wishing to request access should contact;

Careers Education and Guidance Policy

Meols Cop High School is committed to fulfilling it’s statutory duties in relation to Careers Education and Guidance. The school’s Careers policy ensures that all registered students at the school are provided with independent careers guidance from year 7 to year 11.

DfE Careers guidance and access for education and training providers

This is a statutory guidance from the Department for Education. This means that recipients must have regard to it when carrying out duties relating to independent careers guidance and provider access to schools.

External Providers

Meols Cop High school has close links with all local and specialist post 16 and post 18 education and training providers.

Colleges, training providers, universities and employers are regularly invited into school to support the careers programme, which in turn contributes to the process of preparing our students for their chosen career path.

Impartial* Career Guidance is an essential part of the educational process by which young people, from the earliest years, develop the abilities to make well informed and realistic career decisions, from what GCSE subjects to choose to what to do after their GCSEs, how to get a job or apprenticeship, and many other topics.

*meaning we do not recommend any institution over others, but make pupils aware of all options and institutions and allow them to form their own preferences, based on factors such as travel, experience on a visit, course availability etc.

By Year 11 all students have had the opportunity to have at least one appointment with an impartial Careers Adviser qualified to Level 6 in Career Guidance and Development. Those at risk of NEET / SEND or vulnerable students can be seen more than once.

Our Careers Adviser is also available to support the GCSE options process in Year 9 and all students have access to independent careers advice by request or referral from Year 7-11. Referrals can be made via their progress leaders, learning tutors of directly via our careers team careers@meolscop.co.uk

Parents/carers are also welcome to request or attend a careers interview for their son or daughter by using the same email address or calling school

In addition to this, our Careers Advisor is available at parent’s evenings from Year 9 onwards, as well as being on hand to provide support on GCSE results day.

We review our destinations data as part of the evaluation process to consistently make improvements and celebrate the success of our students. Student tracking is used to monitor and evaluate student career and course choices to ensure suitable post 16 choices are made.

If you have ever attended MCHS, we would love to hear from you to join our Alumni.  Please contact our careers team, careers@meolscop.co.uk

Meols Cop High and Southport Hospital work to create next generation of healthcare professionals

Meols Cop High School and Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust are collaborating to offer students an innovative programme of opportunities to explore careers in the healthcare sector. The aim of the collaboration is to support recruitment and retention strategies in the NHS and give students an insight into the vast and varied number of career opportunities available to them.

The partnership will offer students the chance to work with professionals from different departments of the hospital, including nursing, health care assistants, radiology and finance. Through interactive sessions and work experience opportunities, students will gain valuable knowledge and hands-on experience of what it takes to work in the healthcare sector, including the essential skills required for each role.
